2018 CONFERENCE COMPETITIONS

As an interdisciplinary initiative, Wharton People Analytics draws on numerous areas of study, from psychology to management, to fuel our work with organizations and drive innovation. Our competitions are an annual opportunity for us to learn from new voices in the field and celebrate the innovation that is occurring all around us – by academic researchers, student teams, and startup companies alike.

Research Paper Competition

The fourth annual research paper competition showcases the latest, unpublished research in people analytics. Submissions this year involved a diverse set of research topics including advanced analytics around compensation, attitude measurement, diversity, and hiring.

Student Case Competition

We are thrilled to partner with Global Health Corps (GHC) for our fifth annual Case Competition. GHC is a nonprofit organization with the mission to build the movement for health equality by placing Fellows at high-impact health organizations and training them to be global leaders. Student teams analyzed real data from the Fellow selection process at GHC to recommend strategies to optimize their application review process.

Startup Competition

The second annual startup competition showcases cutting edge startups working in the field of people analytics, from predictive hiring to employee retention. Startups have the opportunity to win one of three awards: Most Impactful, Best User Experience, and Most Innovative Use of Data.

RESEARCH PAPER COMPETITION

If you’re a scholar, student, or industry practitioner researching data-driven approaches to people analytics challenges, we’d love to know what you’ve been working on. Submit your original, unpublished research to the Wharton People Analytics Conference Research Paper Competition. The competition highlights the latest research in people analytics from around the world. Last year’s competition saw a diverse array of papers on topics ranging from the salience of diversity attributes to the impact of managers on employee attrition in organizations.

Global Health Corps Mission

GHC’s mission is to mobilize a global community of emerging leaders who share a common belief: health is a human right. GHC is building this movement by recruiting young, cross-sector talent from around the world to join a one-year fellowship program and then stay engaged in the alumni community to pioneer a brighter future in global health. GHC competitively selects fellows with diverse skill sets to fill pre-identified talent gaps at high-impact health organizations in year-long paid positions. Fellows are placed in cross-national pairs, with one national fellow from the placement country and one international fellow from a different country.

Problem Statement

We invite participants to analyze data from the fellow selection process at GHC and recommend strategies to optimize their application review process. Based on the research questions that will be supplied in the “Case Competition Overview”, opportunities may include: improving the way they assign reviewers to specific positions, improving the way they instruct reviewers to assess applications, and even eliminating rounds of review altogether.

Submission Details

We invite students from all schools and degree programs to enter the competition as individuals or teams of up to three students.

Each team will be required to submit a memo and slide deck by 11:59pm EST on February 25, 2018.

  • Memo: The memo should summarize the research process and findings and should be no more than five pages. The total submission (including supplemental materials) should be no longer than 10 pages. Participants should provide a detailed description of their methodology and analysis to support their conclusions.
  • Slide deck: The slide deck should be comprehensive and ready to present if the team is selected as a finalist. Presentations will last 10 minutes, followed by five minutes of Q&A. Time limits will be strictly enforced. Please make sure that your submitted slides are widescreen (16:9) format. The winning team will present the slide deck that they submit during the submission process; no amendments to the submitted slide decks will be allowed. This is intended to maintain continuity and integrity from the first phase of judging to the second phase during the conference. Please review your information carefully before submission!

Selected finalists are expected to bring five printed copies and an electronic version of their slide decks to the 2018 People Analytics Case Competition, ready to present on March 22. At a minimum the lead student should be present, but it would be great to have all team members present.

Submissions are now closed for 2018. Thank you for your interest!
