While disruptive times often breed uncertainty and a scaling back of investment in workforce talent, research has found that companies that renew their commitment to employee development in a downturn recover more quickly. To help companies create more effective talent management solutions in these unprecedented times, experts at Wharton People Analytics and DiversityInc Media, LLC collaborated to investigate the relationships among diversity and inclusion practices and employees’ experiences at work, with a focus on the factors driving feelings of inclusion and belonging in companies today.

Do larger incomes make people happier? Two authors of the present paper have published contradictory answers. Does happiness rise with log(income) and then plateau beyond $75,000/y, as Kahneman found in 2010? Or does happiness rise steadily with log(income) without a plateau, as I’d found in 2021? As a conclusion about the overall trend, they can’t both be true. The question was whether there was a way to simultaneously explain both results, or whether we were just stuck with two contradictory conclusions. We embarked on an adversarial collaboration to find out.

Virtually all Fortune 500 companies offer diversity training to their employees. Yet surprisingly few of them have measured its impact. That’s unfortunate, considering evidence has shown that diversity training can backfire, eliciting defensiveness from the very people who might benefit most. And even when the training is beneficial, the effects may not last after the program ends.
